Manama: Kuwait's food safety committee has lifted a ban on the import of vegetables and fruits from Spain and Germany, but kept it on the import of poultry meat from the United States.

The Gulf country imposed the ban in June amid fears of the deadly E. coli outbreak in Europe and established a panel made up of health, agriculture and environment officials to oversee the issue.

Other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries also stopped imports of cucumber, tomato and lettuce from Germany and Spain.

The committee said that the decision to lift the ban was based on a decision by the health ministry, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported.

However, the committee said that a ban on the import of poultry meat from the US would not be lifted, KUNA said.
