Manama: Kuwait’s religious authorities said that it would suspend any imam who refused to record his Friday sermons as required by the regulations.
“We have noted that several imams and preachers have yet to comply with the rules to record their sermons,” a source at the Ministry of Justice, Endowments and Islamic Affairs has said.
“They have argued that they would do it only if all other imams complied. The ministry will not hesitate to apply the regulations stipulated in the Mosque Charter signed by the imams upon their appointment,” the source said, quoted by local daily Al Rai on Thursday.
Warnings to violators would be followed by suspension, the source who was not named said.
The Justice minister in August revived the rule to have all imams and preachers record their Friday sermons for possible reference.
Kuwait this summer asked imams to avoid tackling domestic issues in Arab countries and to focus on moral preaching.
The situations in Syria and Egypt in particular have been hot discussion issues in Kuwait where large communities from the two countries live.
