Manama: Kuwait's foreign ministry has condemned the burning of the Iranian flag at a rally in Kuwait City, saying that it was an "irresponsible act."

"This is an irresponsible act by a deviant group that breaches laws and norms and seriously undermines distinguished relations between the State of Kuwait and its neighbor Iran," a foreign ministry source said.

Kuwait reiterates its keenness on relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and pledges that necessary measures will be taken to address such malpractices, the source said, cited by Kuwait news Agency (Kuna).

A gathering was staged Wednesday night by lawmakers and religious activists after authorities arrested Hamad Al Naqi, a blogger who reportedly posted remarks on the micro-blogging website Twitter that were deemed offensive to the Prophet (PBUH), his wife Aisha and some of his companions.

The tweets sparked a flurry of calls from several MPs to take stringent action against Al Naqi and "anyone who insulted the Prophet, his family or his companions."

Sectarian tension is steadily increasing in Kuwait despite public calls by the government to calm the situation.
