Manama: Kuwait’s national football team coach has been shot by a neighbour following a dispute over a piece of land in Serbia, his native homeland.
Goran Tufegdzić has been transferred to the intensive care unit of a local hospital, his wife has said, the Kuwaiti news site Sabr reported.
A Kuwaiti delegation, comprising the assistant coach, the goalkeepers’ coach and the team manager, has been dispatched to visit Tufegdzić to offer their sympathy and support to the coach who was on holiday when misfortune struck, the site said.
“His wife told me that the coach is in critical condition,” the team manager said.
The neighbour who pulled out the gun and shot Tufegdzi was well into his seventies.
Tufegdzićis highly appreciated in Kuwait, particularly after coaching the national team to win the Gulf tournament in Yemen in 2010 and the West Asian Championship in 2011, ending a 12-year drought.
He was appointed head coach of Kuwait in February 2009 and under his management the national team has played 31 matches, winning 13, drawing 14 and losing four. The team has scored 53 goals during the period while conceding 29.
