Manama: Customs officers at Kuwait airport have foiled two separate attempts to smuggle 50,000 tramadol pills into the country.

Both attempts occurred within six hours of each other and involved Egyptian passengers, local media report.

The first passenger had 30,000 tramadol pills well concealed in his suitcase and arrived at dawn.

The police believe he carefully selected the time, believing vigilance would not be high among customs officers.

However, as he looked agitated, his suitcase was meticulously searched and the pills were found hidden inside.

The second passenger arrived six hours later and attempted to smuggle in 20,000 tramadol pills strapped to his legs.

However, he too was searched and detained.

Authorities in Kuwait and in the other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have raised their guard amid a marked increase in the number of narcotics smuggling cases.
