Manama: An expatriate teacher in Kuwait has been fired for sticking chewing gum on a student’s hair.

The teacher, in her first months in the country, became exasperated with the seventh grade student who was chewing gum, and decided to punish her by sticking it into her hair.

The student reported the incident and an investigation was launched by the education district and the education ministry legal affairs department, local Arabic daily Al Watan reported on Monday.

The district recommended the termination of the teacher’s contract for failing to comply with the charter on avoiding the humiliation of students as a way to punish them.

Most online comments supported the decision, insisting on the significance of taking the right approach by teachers towards disciplining students.

A few comments blamed the student for her misbehaviour by chewing gum in class.
