Manama: Kuwait has donated $6.419 million (Dh23.57 million) for the 2017 aid programmes of the United Nations agencies, a Kuwaiti official has said.

Deputy Permanent Delegate to the UN Abdul Aziz Saud Al Jarallah said Kuwait has honoured all its aid pledges pursuant to the directives and initiatives of the Amir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah.

The new contributions reaffirm Kuwait’s long history of supporting the economic development around the globe, he added, cited by Kuwait News Agency (Kuna).

Al Jarallah said $2 million will go to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), $1 million to the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR), and $1 million to the UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF).

The contributions also cover $570,000 that will go to the UN Development Programme (UNDP), $500,000 to the Global Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria, $500,000 to the UN Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR), $354,000 to the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), $200,000 to the UN Children’s Fund (Unicef), $200,000 to the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), $50,000 to the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), $20,000 to the UN Institute for Training and Research (Unitar), $10,000 to the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, $10,000 to the UN housing fund, and $5,000 to the UN Fund for Drug Abuse Control.
