Manama: Kuwait’s foreign minister has denied reports that the US administration has been critical of the measures taken by Kuwait towards protesters.
“I am the minister of foreign affairs and this is the first time I hear about this claim,” Shaikh Sabah Al Khalid told reporters in Kuwait City.
Arrest of protesters
According to the reports, the US had sent a letter complaining about the decision of the Kuwaiti authorities to arrest people involved in protests.
Dozens of protesters, mainly young people led by sitting lawmakers, muscled their way through the police into the parliament last week to press for a new government.
However, the unprecedented action was condemned by the Emir who ordered a zero-tolerance policy towards violent rallies and demonstrations.
“I stress that the friendship between Kuwait and the US is based upon international principles related to mutual respect and non-interference in the domestic affairs of the other country,” Shaikh Sabah said at a press conference alongside his French counterpart, Alain Juppe, on Tuesday.
“The Americans are well aware that Kuwait has its constitution and that it takes measures within the confines of the constitution and the law,” he said.
