Manama: A Kuwait court on Thursday acquitted blogger Mutlaq Al Sanad, dropping the charges levelled against him of undermining the status of the Emir.

The court also acquitted blogger Saqr Al Hashash, who faced a similar charge after tweeting remarks deemed offensive to the Emir.

However, Saqr will remain in prison awaiting another court case. He was acquitted in an earlier trial on May 3.

Kuwait authorities pledged to take legal action against bloggers and social media users who “trespassed well-established social values and traditions.”

Several bloggers had been put on trial for their remarks. The move has been described by NGOs as restrictions on freedom of expression, but several lawmakers said that they supported the move, arguing that the bloggers were well aware that they were breaking the law.
