Manama: A Kuwaiti court on Sunday acquitted blogger Fatima Al Mattar in a case brought against her for allegedly abusing the status of the country’s emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah.
Fatima’s trial was the latest in a string of court cases against bloggers charged with undermining the status of the emir by posting “offensive or insulting remarks” on social networks or microblogs.
In a separate case, the court of appeals adjourned the trial of three former lawmakers to May 26.
Ex-MPs Falah Al Sawagh, Khalid Al Tahoos and Bader Al Dahoom were sentenced by a lower court to three years in prison for targeting the prerogatives of the emir and abusing the political regime.
The trio uttered the remarks in speeches they gave last year at the pinnacle of the bitter stand-off between the opposition and the government over the merit of amending the controversial 2006 electoral law.
