Manama: Kuwait authorities have arrested 13 beggars in the first week of Ramadan, the holy month during which Muslims boost their acts of charity.
A special unit tasked with fighting begging in Ramadan arrested three Arab women at Al Mubarikiya Market, local Arabic daily Al Shahed reported on Monday. Seven beggars, including women and children, were arrested as they were asking for money in front of a mosque in the capital while three Asian beggars were apprehended at Al Fahaihal Markets.
According to the unit, eight of the beggars were wanted in connection with cases of absconding and were transferred to the competent authorities.
Kuwait does not allow begging and has pledged zero-tolerance towards allowing people to beg for money, particularly during the month of Ramadan when people, both locals and foreigners, have a stronger tendency to offer money and to engage in acts of charity.
