Manama: A Kuwaiti social network activist is being investigated by police after she confessed to stealing her mother's jewellery to give money to her boyfriend.

The 21-year-old political science student reportedly well known for her pro-reform tweets and for advocating strong measures against corrupt officials, was arrested after her mother alerted the police about the theft of jewellery worth around KD 3,000 ($10,800), local Arabic daily Al Rai reported on Sunday.

She did not know then that her daughter was the thief. The mother said that she had bought the jewellery in the UAE and that she wanted the police to help locate it, particularly after her daughter said that she had no knowledge about its location.

However, the mother told the police that only she and her daughter were aware of where she placed her jewellery. The information was used to put pressure on the daughter.

The student initially denied any knowledge about the fate of the lost items, but the police found messages she had exchanged with her boyfriend about giving him money.

Confronted with the evidence, the girl admitted that she had stolen the jewellery and that she sold it for KD1,700 ($6,116). According to Al Rai, the girl kept KD400 ($1,440) and gave the rest to her boyfriend. The newspaper said that she informed the police about the shop that bought the jewellery and about her boyfriend who was subsequently summoned.

The student was kept in police custody for theft.
