Manama: Kuwait has dismissed reports about “unusual Iraqi military moves near the Kuwaiti-Iraqi borders” as untrue and lacking credibility.

There are no Iraqi military moves, mobilisation or deployment at the borders, Interior Ministry Undersecretary Abdullah Al Muhanna was quoted as saying by the ministry’s security information department.

“Kuwaiti border security personnel are properly carrying out their duties and they are fully aware of their responsibilities,” Al Muhanna said.

The undersecretary urged everyone in the country to take into consideration public interest and national security, stressing that they that should be put above all other considerations, the ministry statement, carried by Kuwait News Agency (Kuna) said on Saturday.

The Iraqi defence ministry also denied the reports claiming Iraqi military troops were deployed in the south of the country near the borders with Kuwait. “Iraqi security forces have not carried out any movement in the south, and the reports about military formations near the Iraqi-Kuwaiti borders are not true,” a ministry source told the Kuwaiti official news agency.

The Kuwaiti-Iraqi borders are around 200-kilometres long.

In 1990, the army of then President Saddam Husain crossed the borders to invade Kuwait and stayed there until its liberation in 1991.
