Expat impersonates Kuwaiti policeman to impress woman

Manama: A Syrian man living in Kuwait has taken the old cliché “women love a man in uniform” too far by pretending he was a local policeman to impress the young woman he loved.

The expatriate, in his early 20s, was so desperate to have her fall in love with him that he donned a summer police uniform and set up a one-man checkpoint near a major shopping complex and stopped several people, mainly foreigners, to check their identities, local daily Al Rai reported on Tuesday.

Bewildered by the man’s behaviour and intrigued by his summer uniform in the middle of a particularly cold winter, onlookers reported the unusual situation to the police.

When policemen arrived at the scene, they found the fake policeman asking people to present their identification papers.

He told them that he was a real policeman and that he was doing his job. However, a prompt check with the operations room revealed that he was lying and that the Kuwaiti name he had put on his uniform badge was not genuine.

Afraid he would be sent to prison for impersonating a Kuwaiti police officer, the Syrian national tried to escape, but he was eventually arrested, the report said.

At the police station, he admitted that he wore the police uniform to pretend he was a Kuwaiti national working in the police force and impress a young woman to win her love.

The police are still investigating the case.
