Manama: A Kuwait court has reinstated five parliamentary candidates after it cancelled the interior ministry's decision barring them from running in the elections.
The Administrative Court said that the decision against Abdul Hamid Dashti, Mohammad Al Hafiti, Adel Al Shaheen, Mohammad Al Beloushi and Eisa Al Ajmi was based on an excessive interpretation of the rules that bar people who were subject to court rulings from running in elections, Arabic daily Al Rai reported on Friday.
The court earlier this week reinstated other parliament hopefuls, including former lawmaker Faisal Al Muslim whose ban decision had sparked a controversy and threats to take to the street by his supporters, countered by heavy criticism by his opponents of the pressure tactics.
On Sunday, the Administrative Court will issue its decision on the challenge by candidate Khalaf Dmaithar who was also barred by the interior ministry from joining the race.
Around 400,000 Kuwaitis are scheduled to cast their ballots on February 2 to elect a new 50-member parliament.
