Manama: Kuwaitis have rejected a report claiming that Christians were persecuted in Kuwait, saying that the information was "erroneous and baseless."

The 2011 Open Doors World Watch List on the status of Christians worldwide ranked Kuwait as 28th among the countries where Christians were allegedly persecuted.

However, for Kuwaitis, the annual list compiled by Open Doors International that tracks Christian life in 77 societies, does not reflect the reality on the ground.

"The information and ranking in the report are most certainly wrong," one blogger wrote in Al Rai daily.

"Christians in Kuwait are not persecuted in any way and live peacefully with Muslims. They have all their rights and they have a big church in Hawalli. All ministries give them time off to celebrate their religious holidays," the blogger wrote.

For Um Eisa, Kuwait would be the last country where religious groups could be persecuted.

"This is totally unfair. Muslims are being persecuted in many Western countries while in Kuwait, there is no discrimination on religious grounds," she wrote.

"Unfortunately, there is a tendency to put Kuwait down for whatever reasons."

A blogger who signed as "Expatriate" said that he did not believe the report because of the fallacies it contained.

"I wonder where you get the information from. All I know is that Christians here are more respected than Muslims. Employers even prefer Christian domestic helpers. Salaries earned by Christians are higher than those Muslims receive and there is ample evidence to support that," Expatriate wrote.

Mohammad, another blogger, said that Arab and Muslim countries should start producing annual reports on the status of Muslims in non-Muslim countries.

"Arab countries should start tracking persecution cases against Muslims in America, Europe and Israel, the way these countries do for Christians and document them," Mohammad wrote.

"Christians in Arab countries lead secure and comfortable lives, but there is this nasty attitude by some organisations to try to put down some countries."

The top 10 countries on the 2011 list are North Korea, Iran, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Maldives, Yemen, Iraq, Uzbekistan and Laos.
