Manama: A prominent Kuwaiti columnist has called for burning most of religious legacy books for causing the sectarian tension between Sunnis and Shiites afflicting the Middle East.
“We must burn up to 95 per cent of these books, Fouad Al Hashem said in an interview with Rotana Khalijiia television.
The columnist with Al Watan local daily also accused the Muslim Brotherhood of exploiting the Palestinian blood to reach power.
“I wish they were all buried in the Empty Quarter under the sands until Judgement Day,” he said, referring to the largest sand desert in the world, encompassing most of the southern third of the Arabian Peninsula.
Al Hashem said that Egyptian President Anwar Al Sadat helped the Islamists emerge, but they eventually killed him, according to excerpts published in Saudi news site Al Marsad.
Sadat was assassinated by members of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad in October 1981 during an annual victory parade held in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
The columnist added he believed that dealing with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) was impossible.
“Bashar Al Assad is an angel compared with ISIL,” he said. “At least, he is a Baathist and we can discuss with him. But how can we have discussions with those who claim they are God’s successors on Earth?”
He said that he would not rule out that Iran had set up the organisation.
