Police arrested a 40-year-old woman who disguised herself as a man and tried to deliver a sermon in a mosque.

The incident took place at the Al Fateh Mosque, according to a report in yesterday's edition of the London-based Al Sharq Al Awsat newspaper.

Adnan Al Qatan, the mosque's imam, said the woman had even donned a fake beard before joining the front row of 7,000 men gathered for the prayers.

"She tried to walk up the stairs of the pulpit, where I was trying to prepare for the Friday sermon," Al Qatan said.

"A man caught her to stop her, thinking that she was a man and that is when her beard fell off and everybody saw her.

"It was a real surprise for everyone. The woman was very masculine. She had really strong arms and four men could not stop her until another group of men caught her and turned her over to police."

The woman was holding a pen and writing pad on which she might have written a sermon, the newspaper added.
