Manama: Tragedy struck a Bahraini family for the third time in two weeks when the son of a television broadcaster died a few hours after his mother passed away and 17 days after his maternal grandmother was buried.
Hesham Ali Hassan, 27, had to be admitted to the Salmaniya Medical Hospital where he collapsed and died, apparently suffering from diabetic issues aggravated by news of the death of his mother, veteran television and radio broadcaster and programme hostess Karima Zidani, on Sunday morning.
Relatives said that Hesham had not eaten or drunk anything since his mother passed away and that he had resisted all their attempts to feed him.
“Hesham was suffering from diabetes and when he heard about his mother’s death, he simply abstained from eating or drinking,” his uncle, Mohammad Zidani, said.
“I took him to hospital on Monday when I saw that he was feeling exhausted and the doctors carried out tests on him and decided to keep him. However, his condition dramatically deteriorated and he died in the afternoon,” he said.
The uncle added that he was upset over claims that Hesham committed suicide following the death of his mother.
“I am not really keen on social networks and microblogs and I do not believe what people are posting, but I do know that those who launched rumours against my nephew were behaving immorally and unethically, especially that he had to put up with his own ailment and the tragedies that struck the family,” the uncle said.
News that Karima’s son died hours after she was laid to rest were initially thought to be a joke on April’s Fool Day.
In December, Bahrainis were shocked to hear about how a father died less than one week after his son’s death. The father was believed to have been devastated by the loss of his son.
