Manama: Thousands of Bahrainis formed long streams that stretched kilometres around the Pearl Roundabout, the focal point of the protests that have marked the country for the last nine days.

Waving the red and white colours of the Bahraini flag, men and women marched towards the white monument in a massive demonstration where size seemed to hold a special significance.

On Monday, a large crowd, estimated by reports to vary between 150,000 to 300,000, held a rally around Al Fateh Mosque, the largest place of worship in Bahrain, in which the newly formed National Unity Rally called for the reinforcement of national unity and the shunning of sectarianism.

Tuesday’s march started at around 3pm, and the numbers kept swelling as more people joined at the end of their daily professional commitments.

No security forces were visible near the march or at the Pearl Roundabout and the interior ministry used its Twitter account twice to announce that “Road 28 near Bahrain Mall is currently closed” and that “Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Highway going toward Manama is currently closed.”
