Manama: An elementary school teacher was referred to the public prosecutor in Bahrain for using a wooden ruler with nails on her students.
The decision to suspend the teacher and take legal action against her was taken upon a recommendation from an investigation formed by the education ministry following complaints from parents that she regularly resorted to violence to deal with students in her class.
The probe panel said that it had collected testimonies from several people who confirmed that the teacher fixed the nails on the ruler and used to hit the students, causing them physical and psychological pain. Violence is banned in Bahrain’s private and public schools at all levels.
Students in elementary schools in Bahrain are usually between six and 12 years old.
Although elementary schools are not mixed in government schools, women can teach boys up to the fifth grade.
