Manama: Kuwait's government has turned down a draft law submitted by the parliament allowing military and securitymen to grow beards.

Difficulties in implementing the law, mainly among airmen, and a violation of the principles of discipline and commitment in the military institutions were cited by the government for rejecting the draft, Al Siyassah daily reported on Tuesday, quoting sources it did not name.

The parliament in December approved a draft law that allows men serving in the army, police and national guard to grow beards.

The 30 lawmakers, mainly members of Islamist societies, defended it as a right for Kuwaiti men and overcame resistance from the government to present it in a draft law.
