Manama: King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa has called for wide-ranging improvements to the way journalists are treated, with access to information and housing at the top of the list.
The king, chairing the weekly cabinet session, also called for providing security, protection and freedom for journalists within the confines of the law.
Paying tribute to journalists who are keen on boosting the performance of the government through careful monitoring and constructive, objective criticism, King Hamad stressed closer coordination between the various official institutions and agencies to provide full information and details on issues of public interest through an official spokesperson for the state.
King Hamad urged the government to cooperate with the parliament for the promulgation of a new press law and asked the housing ministry to allocate housing units for journalists, referring to them as partners in the development of the state.
During the cabinet session, King Hamad said that Bahrain remained committed to help Syrian refugees and that he gave orders to the Royal Charity Foundation to arrange for the construction of a school for their children to help them continue their studies.
“This is a religious and humanitarian duty,” King Hamad said, quoted by Bahrain News Agency (BNA).
A delegation from the foundation currently in Jordan has been asked to follow up the school project.
