Manama: Adel Al Taweel, the last Bahraini fisherman to be released by Qatar after weeks of detention, is to be sent abroad for medical treatment.
Hours after he landed in Bahrain, Al Taweel, 37, was received by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the president of the public commission for the protection of marine resources, environment and wildlife, who said that, upon directives from King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa, he would be sent abroad to receive medical treatment.
The fisherman said upon his arrival that he was still suffering from pains in his chest and his back after he was shot on May 8 by Qatari coastguards for allegedly straying into their waters and resisting arrest. Al Taweel claims that his boat never entered Qatari waters.
"They took me to the shore where I was airlifted to a hospital in Doha," Al Taweel said, describing what happened after he was shot. "They treated my wound both at the hospital and when I was detained. However, I still feel pain."
