Manama: The overwhelming majority of companies in Bahrain have been committed to an afternoon outdoor work ban, a labour ministry official has said.

According to Ahmad Jaafar Al Hayki, inspection and trade unions head, 99 per cent of the companies have been complying with the rule that bans forcing labourers to work under the scorching heat of the summer sun from noon to 4 pm.

Only 73 establishments have been found violating the law since its implementation on July 1, the official said.

Any employer caught violating the ban will be referred to the Public Prosecution and will have to pay a fine of BD50-BD300 per worker. The ban however, exempts companies that follow up on emergency work, such as fixing electricity networks.

Bahrain and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have been implementing the ban to boost safety standards among labourers
