Bomb material discovered after the explosion - Interior ministry

Manama: Police in Bahrain said that a charred body found in a burnt house was that of a man who had been convicted and sentenced in absentia to more than 42 years in several cases of terrorism.

The investigations into the Eker village fire that killed one man on April 1 concluded that the blaze was caused by the premature detonation of a bomb that the deceased was in the process of assembling, the General Director of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science said.

Witnesses reported hearing a large explosion at the location before the fire broke out, he added.

“The body was identified through a DNA test as of Hussain Ahmad Mohammad Hassan, 21, who had been convicted and sentenced in absentia to more than 42 years in several different terrorism cases,” he said.

According to the General Director, another ready-to-use bomb was found after the fire was extinguished and was defused at the location.

“Several other bombs were found, in addition to bomb-making materials and mobile phone detonators linked to wires. The police also confiscated homemade shotguns and ammunition from the location,” he said in a statement posted online by the interior ministry.

The General Director added that the deceased had a long criminal record and that he had been convicted in a number of terrorism cases.

“Among the cases, he was sentenced to life for his role in the death of a policeman. He had also been sentenced, in a separate case, to 14 years in jail for attacking a police patrol and for the possession of explosives in East Eker,” he said.

The case was referred to the public prosecution for legal action.
