Manama: Patients Know Best (PKB), a medical group founded by a Bahraini in Britain, has won the 'Best Social Innovation Startup 2010' award in Europe.

The award is one of several, called the Europas, and run by TechCrunch Europe, a blog covering Web 2.0 and Mobile start-up companies. It's apparently known as the Oscars of the European technology start-ups.

An award-giving ceremony in London took place after a month of online voting for the finalists by European tech start-up companies, with 33,126 votes cast across 23 categories. Eight judges deliberated over the results.

PKB is the first company to use the British NHS Connecting for Health network to help patients to work with clinicians, Dr Mohammad Al Ubaydli, the CEO and founder of Patients Know Best, said.

Al Ubaydali has over 15 years of experience in medical software and was trained as a physician at the University of Cambridge. He worked as a staff scientist at the National Institute of Health and was a management consultant to US hospitals at the Advisory Board Company.

The author of six books on health care, Al Ubaydli also founded PKB at Cambridge.
