Manama: Bahrain and Britain have agreed to boost cooperation to safeguard stability and security in the region, Bahrain’s foreign minister has said.
King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa on Thursday met British Prime Minister David Cameron in London for official talks.
“The visit by HM King Hamad is highly significant and is happening at a time when closer ties between Bahrain and London are required,” Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmad Al Khalifa said.”
The talks between King Hamad and Cameron covered bilateral relations and ways to safeguard stability and security in the region. The two leaders also discussed ways to safeguard peace in the Middle East as well as the latest developments in Syria. “There is common concern about the bloodshed [in Syria] and its repercussions for security in the region,” Shaikh Khalid said in a statement carried by the Bahrain News Agency.
The minister said that Bahrain has requested expert assistance on strategic matters from the British government. “We agreed to bolster cooperation to preserve energy security, combat the proliferation of nuclear weapons, terrorism and piracy. Bahrain will also benefit from British technical support to reinforce pluralism and human rights,” he said.
A joint task team to be headed by the foreign ministers of both countries could be set up to consolidate consultations in various areas, Shaikh Khalid said, adding that King Hamad had offered his congratulations to Cameron and the British people on the success of the Olympic Games hosted by London.
