Manama: Bahrain's National Safety Court of First Instance on Thursday sentenced 13 doctors to 15 years in prison.

The court also sentenced two medical staff to 10 years and five to five years.

According to the verdict, Ali Al Ekri, Ali Al Sadadi, Nader Al Diwani, Ahmad Abdul Aziz Omran, Mahmood Asghar, Ebrahim Al Demistani, Rula Saffar, Abdul Khalid Al Uraibi, Ghassan Dhaif, Bassam Dhaif, Marhoon Al Wadai, Nada Dhaif and Qasim Omran will have to spend 15 years in prison.

Hassan Al Toblani and Saeed Al Samahiji were condemned to 10 years and Fatima Haji, Dhia Ebrahim, Najah Khalil and Zahra Al Sammak to five years.

The charges leveled against the medical and paramedical staff, included occupying a hospital, possession of weapons, calling for the overthrow of the regime, inciting for the hatred of the regime, seizing medical equipment, restraining policemen, stalling the application of the law and refusing to provide assistance to people in need.

The court also sentenced Ali Al Taweel to death and Ali Shamlooh to life in prison on charges of killing a policeman in March.

Ali Ahmad Rashed Al Mraisi, 30, was reportedly killed during clashes between the police and demonstrators after he was "run over by an unidentified car" in Sitra, 10 kilometres south of Manama, on March 15.

All verdicts can be appealed at the National Safety Court of Appeals.
