Manama: Bahrain's parliament on Tuesday called for a three-month extension of the emergency laws.
The extension would help boost security and stability in the country following four weeks of political turmoil and unrest, the lawmakers said in the motion submitted to the government.
The State of National Safety (emergency laws) was imposed in March by King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa as the authorities sought to restore peace after protesters blocked Manama's main highway and brought the capital to a standstill.
The emergency laws, which are short of the martial laws and do not suspend the parliament, are expected to end in June, and the lower chamber said that it wanted an extension in line with the constitution.
The chamber is made up currently of 22 lawmakers after the 18 MPs representing Al Wefaq, the largest bloc, resigned to protest against the way the government dealt with demonstrators.
