Manama: Bahrain’s authorities on Wednesday urged citizens and residents to report any threats or forceful attempts to restrict their freedoms.
The call was issued following the launch of a campaign to freeze several financial and economic activities, including shopping, on Thursday as protesters mark the second anniversary of the start of the unrest that unfolded in Bahrain in 2011.
Some websites and social communication networks in Bahrain have posted direct threats to individuals, groups, families, workers in shops and businesses to force them not to go out to work and practise their activities on Thursday, the Information Affairs Authority (IAA) said. “This is a desperate attempt by a group of terrorists and saboteurs to impose a so-called mass strike in Bahrain by force. Pamphlets in foreign languages plastered on electricity poles included terrorising and threatening pictures to force citizens and expatriates to stay home,” the IAA said.
All citizens and foreigners should cooperate in confronting the “outlaw groups” and report any threat or attempt to restrict their freedoms to the relevant authorities, it said.
Opposition formations have supported marking the second anniversary of the events and Al Wefaq Society issued acall to stay away from banks, financial institutions, shopping centres and petrol stations throughout Thursday. Supporters should also refrain from engaging in government transactions and from paying bills, the society said.
