Manama: Bahraini lawmakers have called for the introduction of a full medical check up for all citizens every five years.
"Health care is one of the most important responsibilities of the state and deserves special attention and focus," MPs Ali Al Zayed, Soumaya Al Jowder, Hassan BuKhammas, Ahmad Qarata and Ebtissam Hijris said in their motion.
"A complete medical check up every five years for all citizens above the age of 40 is a necessity that will help the people and the state as well," they said.
Regular medical tests will help detect fatal diseases and will enable people to seek treatment before the cases worsen, the five MPs said.
"Many people are not aware of the problems they have and they are shocked when they learn about their existence at a late stage. Several international health organisations and doctors have recommended regular check-ups for all men and women to be sure of their health status," they said.
Medical care is free in Bahrain for all Bahrainis and the constitution stipulates that every citizen is entitled to health care.
According to Article 8, the "State cares for public health and the State ensures the means of prevention and treatment by establishing a variety of hospitals and healthcare institutions."
