Manama: A Bahraini woman has been referred to the public prosecution after she was allegedly caught attempting to fraudulently take a final exam on behalf of her sister.

The education ministry said that the suspect allegedly passed herself off as her sister, a student at a school for girls in Sitra, 13km south of the capital Manama, who was supposed to take an English exam as a prerequisite for graduation.

According to the ministry, the cheating attempt was punishable by the penal code.

Under Bahrain’s education system, high school students have to obtain a passing grade in all subjects for them to graduate.

Students who score well in most subjects, but fail in one have to re-take the exam.

In a separate incident, a student who tried to cheat her way into scholarships by reportedly tampering with her grades on the school certificate has also been referred to the public prosecution.

The ministry said that the girl presented a graduation certificate showing that she obtained 93.5 per cent in the sixth semester and 91.6 per cent as GPA.

However, education officials discovered the mismatch with the actual grades stored in the central computer and launched an investigation.

The probe concluded there was a manipulation of the grades and a case was lodged against the student for tampering with official documents, the ministry said.

The above 90 per cent average offers students more opportunities for their university education.
