Manama: A Bahraini court on Thursday sentenced nine people charged with kidnapping a policeman to 20 years in prison.

Only one defendant, Ali Saeed Abdul Aziz, was acquitted in the case by the National Safety Court of First Instance, composed of one military and two civil judges.

The court verdict is not final and can be appealed within two weeks. Under the state of national safety, the National Safety Court of Appeals looks into rulings issued by the lower court.

The appeals court is expected to announce on Sunday its final ruling in the case of four defendants sentenced to death and three to life in prison for their alleged role in the death of two policemen in March.
