Manama: A Bahrain official has said that two suspects arrested in connection with the terror blast that left an on-duty policeman dead this month are now facing murder and terrorism charges.

The two accomplices who have been taken into custody pending the investigation have also been charged with manufacturing and possessing explosives, Central Governorate Chief Prosecutor Nawaf Al Awadi said.

Mahmoud Fareed was killed on July 4 in East Eker, a village south of the capital Manama, while on duty. He was seriously injured in the blast and his death was announced hours later.

The terror blast and the death have triggered a wave of condemnation from the US, the European Union, political societies and NGOs.

The Public Prosecution said that in addition to the two suspects who had been arrested, an arrest warrant has been issued to track down the other suspects, who are still at large.

The two accused admitted to taking part, along with other accomplices, in manufacturing the explosives and plotting to target the fixed armoured police vehicle, the prosecution said on Saturday.

They also confessed to planting the home-made bomb near the armoured police vehicle and detonating the explosive after monitoring the location of the patrol for several days.

Police investigations revealed that Fareed was praying near the armoured vehicle in East Eker at around 8pm when the bomb went off.

The Public Prosecution launched an inquiry to investigate the circumstances of the fatal terror-blast and identify the perpetrators. It commissioned a coroner to conduct a post-mortem on the body and determine the cause of the policeman’s death. The investigation will continue, pending witnesses’ testimonies as well as the coroner and forensic experts’ reports, the prosecution said.
