Manama: A court in Bahrain has sentenced seven men to 15 years in jail for attempted murder and making, possessing and detonating a homemade bomb that injured five policemen in Bani Jamra, a village west of the capital Manama.

The High Criminal Court in Manama also sentenced nine other people to 10 years for their role in the bomb plot on January 28.

The homemade device was reportedly concealed under a makeshift roadblock set up by protesters on the highway and was detonated when the policemen wanted to clear the way for vehicles.

According to reports, only five of the defendants are in jail after six escaped from custody while the other five have never been traced.

A court last month sentenced 17 men to 15 years in jail each for their role in a bomb explosion that critically injured four policemen on April 9 last year.

In a separate case, a Bahraini a court put off the trial of 21 suspects on charges of illegal assembly to April 18. The suspects who reportedly took part in an illegal rally on January 25 denied the charges.

The court said that it wanted to listen to the testimonies of more witnesses before issuing its verdict
