Abu Dhabi: Police in the Al Gharbia region have arrested three suspects believed to be responsible for breaking into mosques and stealing charitable donations.

All three suspects are unemployed and at least one of them was staying in the country illegally.

According to Colonel Ajil Ali Abdullah Al Junaibi, Director of the Western Region Police Directorate, the suspects broke into the mosques during the night after scouting the premises from the outside to check if there was anybody inside.

After the suspects were confident that the mosque was empty, two thieves would break into the mosque and steal the charitable funds while wearing masks, and the third would remain in the car as a scout and ensure a quick getaway.

The suspected trio stole at least 26 donation collections, with the cash being evenly split between the three alleged thieves.
