Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Sunday received World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director David Beasley.
Shaikh Mohammad hailed the role of WFP in providing humanitarian and food assistance to more than 90 million people in 70 countries around the world.
Shaikh Mohammad and Beasley exchanged talks on difficulties faced by WFP in providing food aid to the poor, such as how hard it is to reach needy segments in certain cases and situations due to combat or other logistic issues.
Beasley praised the humanitarian role and strategic location of the UAE, which operates through various charity institutions, particularly the International Humanitarian City in Jebel Ali, to support the efforts of WFP and other international humanitarian bodies.
He pointed out that the UAE is a role model across the world in the field of humanitarian work, and that it ranks first in terms of charitable and humanitarian aid provided in nations that are witnessing armed conflict, natural disasters or famine.
The meeting was attended by Reem Ebrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for International Cooperation, and other officials.
