Riyadh: Saudi analysts and writers consider the acceptance of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative by Yemen's political parties as a practical step for reaching a peaceful solution to the Yemeni crisis.
Analysts told Gulf News that the proposal, which was presented to both the government and the opposition, has considered complications in the Yemeni political arena and keeping Yemen secure, united and stable in the broader interests of the region.
The GCC initiative entails President Ali Abdullah Saleh handing over power to the vice-president with presidential elections being held in two months. The offer guarantees Saleh will not be prosecuted.
Smooth transition of power
Dr Naif Al Subeihi, professor of political science at King Saud University said the proposal guarantees a smooth transition of power which satisfies both the protesters and the government.
During its weekly meeting on Monday, the Saudi cabinet praised the cooperation of the Yemeni government and opposition with the mediation effort to reach an agreement that would bring peace and stability to the country.
Big hurdles
Ahmad Al Shammari, Saudi political analyst, said one of the big hurdles facing the GCC initiative is the Yemeni protesters insistence in bringing President Saleh, his regime and family members to justice.
Al Shammari urged the GCC states to put an end to Iran's intervention in Yemen. He also urged Yemeni youth to be careful of any foreign influence on their demands.
