Sharjah: An 31-year-old Bangladeshi man living illegally here died after jumping from an apartment in Muwailah area, Sharjah, as he thought a census team that knocked on his door was from the CID, police told Gulf News on Wednesday.

The incident took place when the census team visited the man’s apartment as part of an ongoing census exercise.

The victim opened the door and the team asked him for his name and asked him to bring his ID.

The victim went inside and jumped from the window fearing arrest.

The census officials waited for the victim to come out before calling the police.

The incident was witnessed by several neighbours who watched the man falling.

He was taken to Al Kuwaiti hospital at round 9pm but was pronounced dead on arrival.

On November 10, a 57-year-old Indian man died after falling from the balcony of a high rise apartment in Al Buteena area in Sharjah .

Police were called to the spot after eyewitnesses saw the man falling to the ground. He also thought the census team was from the CID.

Police said the Indian man, who was also an illegal resident, died on the spot.

Both the incidents are being investigated by Al Gharb police station.
