Dubai: A pair of absconding housemaids on Thursday went on trial for allegedly stealing Dh6,000 from their employer after leaving a special needs woman alone in the house, a Dubai Court of First Instance heard.

The two maids took their passports and cash and left the Emirati woman in a wheelchair in the house for some time before an ambulance staff arrived to treat her and called her sister to open the door to let them in.

A 47-year-old Emirati government employee testified that she received a call in August 2015, from an ambulance staff member telling her that they were waiting outside the house in Al Rashidiya area for a routine visit to her sister and that nobody was opening the door.

“They kept ringing the bell but no one opened the door for them for 15 minutes and I tried to call her but she didn’t answer. I called my nephew and he told me the maids were not at home,” the Emirati woman said.

The woman directed her nephew to attend to the rescuers and then later check for the Kenyan maids and their passports.

He discovered that the maids’ passports were missing as well as Dh6,000 in cash. She went to Al Rashidiya police station and lodged a complaint.

The two Kenyan defendants were arrested after two years and were referred to Dubai Public Prosecution where they confessed to stealing cash from their employer.

But, when they appeared in court, they denied the charge and the judge adjourned the case to pronounce the verdict on August 28.
