1. Modhesh returns
Dubai’s famous summer mascot has taken up residence at Modhesh World. The indoor theme park is synonymous with family entertainment during Summer in Dubai and has grown to become a destination in itself, having attracted around 500,000 visitors in previous editions. In its 15th edition, the amusement arena offers a line-up of family fun, featuring internationally renowned entertainment characters and a variety of interactive activities for families.

2. Islam explained
Don’t miss the annual International Holy Quran Award, now in its 18th year, which offers the chance to learn more about Islam through informative lectures from world-renowned Islamic scholars and a Holy Quran memorisation contest.

3. History in detail
The latest exhibition leading up to the 2016 opening of the Zayed National Museum examines the history of the world in 100 compelling objects, such as a 3,000-year-old Yemeni bronze sculpture (pictured), and the Middle East’s role in global events. It is held in collaboration with the British Museum.

4. Feathered friends
Can you hit a pig with a bird in real life? Give it your best shot at the Angry Birds zone at Modhesh World — a life-size version of the popular smartphone game. The interactive facility, which has its world premiere in Dubai, promises to be a one-of-a-kind spectacle for the whole family.

5. Celebrating Eid
How else to mark the end of Ramadan than with concerts and celebrations? Brothers in Bollywood and music director partners Salim and Sulaiman Merchant, composers of the film scores of Dhoom, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Chak De! India and Aaja Nachle, will bring a blend of Western, folk, Hindustani and Sufi music to Dubai for one night only. Dance along to their hits at what promises to be a spectacular show.

6. Freej on stage
Locally produced theatre show Abood’s Dream brings the characters of the animated TV series Freej onto the stage. Abood, the main character, sets out on a fantasy adventure, while looking after a canary that lives in a fish bowl. Along the way he meets new friends and learns new lessons.

7. Marhaba Bollywood
Also celebrating Eid in the UAE is Shreya Ghoshal. The Sa Re Ga Ma Pa winner is now one of Bollywood’s best-known playback singers and has sung for a variety of films, from Devdas to the recent releases Heropanti and Bobby Jasoos. She is expected to sing her hits as well as songs from her new ghazal album, Humnasheen.

8. Stars in real life
The region’s best young talent, winners of reality shows such as Arab Idol and The Voice, takes to the stage as part of Abu Dhabi Summer Season. Singer Mohammed Assaf, illusionist Ahmed Al Bayed and speed painter Mohammad Al Dairi promise a variety night not to be missed.

9. Indian Independence day

10.  Summer slam dunk
Basketball fans should mark the second week of August in their calendars, as that is when the official Fiba Under-17 Basketball World Championship comes to Dubai. Having begun in 2010, the biannual sporting event sees some of the world’s most skilled and talented junior basketball teams challenge each other on the court.

11. David Blaine

12. Water attraction
So you think you can swim? Why not observe some of the world’s best in action?   The international Fina Swimming World Cup, an international competition that is open to all swimmers from Fina member countries, hits Dubai at the end of August. The event spans over two days, with the preliminary rounds held in the morning, while the finals are held during the evenings. The 800-metre and 1,500-metre freestyle races are the exception, which are conducted as timed finals.

13. Disney in Dubai
UAE residents can show their deep love for Disney characters when the world-famous Disney On Ice brings its Rockin’ Ever After show to Dubai. It is the first time the show has toured outside the US. It will feature stories and themes from Disney films including Tangled, Brave, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. The show is one of a series of events set to come to the UAE every year for the next five years.

14. Dubai goes Gaga
As controversial as her music is compelling, Lady Gaga makes her UAE debut with a Dubai concert this September. The pop star’s fourth world tour, ArtRave: The Artpop Ball Tour, stops in the UAE to promote ArtPop, her third album. The unpredictable artist is expected to wow audiences with her unique style and beats.
