Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC), with the support of Health Authority Abu Dhabi and Mubadala’s network of healthcare facilities, Healthpoint and Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, invite the UAE to walk together at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. 2. Wellness weekend
Today is the second day of a special wellness weekend at Oasis Mall, where UAE residents can participate in fun contests and edutainment sessions to win a host of exciting prizes including gym memberships, healthy eating packages and sports cycles. In addition, a healthy food market, fitness demos, art contests and free blood glucose tests are on the menu of activities. The event will also showcase a photo exhibition of people living with diabetes by photographer Siddharth Siva.
3. Beat Diabetes Walk
Next Friday, November 20, is the seventh annual Beat Diabetes Walk in Dubai. Being held at Zabeel Pak, the event is organised by Landmark Group, the retail and hospitality conglomerate. The aim is to raise funds for diabetes research, and all proceeds will go to the Al Jalila Foundation. Each participant will be charged a fee of Dh20, while children between 8 and 14 years only pay Dh10. Children younger than eight can join the walk for free. The Beat Diabetes Walk will span approximately three kilometres. For those who want more than walking, the venue will also offer a host of complimentary fitness activities such as Zumba, yoga, spot challenges and dance routines. In addition, an on-site DJ and live entertainment acts will help create a carnival atmosphere.
The last day to register is tomorrow, November 15, and entries are to be filled out at www.beatdiabetes.me. All registered participants will receive a walkathon kit comprising a Beat Diabetes T-shirt and cap via courier. Park gates open at 7am on the day, while the walk starts at 8am. Events and activities continue till 11:30am. Last year’s event saw 14,000 people walk for diabetes, with a total of Dh900,000 raised for Al Jalila Foundation’s ongoing health care and diabetes research. The organisation provides philanthropic support to world-class medical education and research for a range of conditions.

Diabetes Day Campaign, a new health awareness drive by the UAE-based health care institution is part of an intiative to encourage UAE residents to be more responsible about their health by arranging for regular check-ups and tests and is part of the global World Diabetes Day initiative tomorrow. The drive includes complimentary services provided by doctors and healthcare professionals at both Zulekha Hospitals in Dubai and Sharjah today including cholesterol and blood sugar checks as well as patient BMI scores. If patient test results indicate potential warning signs in relation to diabetes, a follow up appointment will be arranged with one of the hospital’s endocrinologist in order to immediately reduce the risks of developing the disease.
