There is no denying that shopping is Dubai’s official pastime during DSF, but this does not mean you stock up on just any discounted product. The smart shopper picks collectibles that are either classic keepsakes or fit current trend profiles.

Having said that, trends for 2012 cannot be pigeonholed — they are extremely diverse. Everything from pastels to prints and glitter to gloss is in. Notwithstanding the fact that they’ve become borderline clichés, animal prints, leather and fur will still be part of every fashionista’s wardrobe this season. Do I hear a cheer?

A big tip for spring/summer 2012 is investing in pastels. These will work as an antithesis to the over-the-top theatrics of the razzle-dazzle that dominate the UAE fashion scene. However, despite the veritable smorgasbord of styles, colours and patterns making the cut, the mantra will be everyday wearability. In short, dramatic material and finishes in usable everyday patterns and cuts.

So, cover yourself up in a feminine Diesel sheer and sequinned,  but simple black dress, and slip on furry strapped boots from Aldo to set off sirens all over Dubai. A whiff of Bottega Veneta’s fragrance provides the perfect finishing touch.

We’ve seen enough of snug-fit suits for men that make them look like  14 year olds at weddings. The new suits are cleaner and looser; boxier even and are a deliberate departure from the overtly nostalgic slinky cuts. Take a cue from Banana Republic’s classic pale grey suit above.

So, what makes a classic piece stand out in an ocean of fads? Simplicity, for one, is a characteristic that most timeless designs boast. When it comes to furnishings and patterns overtly fussy styling barely hobbles a piece’s entrance into the classics league. A leather sofa, such as the one from Western Furniture pictured here, or the pretty pink cushion, or the mirror on our wall will always be in.

The Kitchen Fashion Police (I kid you not, they exist) are always around so make sure you put serious thought into buying the most up-to-date kitchen equipment before they run out of stock. Wait and you shall regret.

So whether you desperately need to fill a gaping styling-hole in your wardrobe or just want to splurge out on new threads there is no better time than this DSF to indulge.
Here’s a challenge for all you fashion lovers: step out with your wallet this DSF and you won’t come back empty handed. Accepted? Cool.
