Ajman: Eight members of a gang have been arrested for stealing a bag containing Dh100,000 and $10,000 as well as a woman’s handbag containing Dh4,000, Ajman Police said on Wednesday.

Colonel Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, director of Criminal and Investigation Department at Ajman Police, said two people had lodged complaints with the police. The first victim said a stranger told him that there was something wrong with his vehicle’s tyre. When he got down from the car to check, another person snatched his bag and fled.

The other complaint was from an Arab woman who said that a person told her there was an oil leak from her vehicle. When she got down to check, a person snatched her handbag containing Dh4,000 and ran away.

A police team identified one suspect and his residence in Ajman.

Police raided the suspect’s house and arrested all of eight men despite their putting up a fierce resistance.

The suspects confessed to their crime and the case has been transferred to public prosecution.

Col Al Matroushi appealed to all community members to take care of their personal possessions and to make sure to lock the doors and windows of their vehicle before departure.

In an earlier interview with Gulf News, Col Al Matroushi said police have dedicated a special unit to tackle bank crimes as well as a quick response team.

Col Al Matroushi advised people to use paper transactions between banks and money exchanges in case of withdrawal of huge sums of money for their safety.

“Be extremely cautious after you withdraw huge sums of money from banks,” he said.
