Dubai: Some US-bound passengers flying with Etihad Airways will be given free Wi-Fi and iPads during their flight starting April 2, the airline said on Wednesday.

The new offer comes as an alternative to the security ban imposed by the United States government on nonstop flights from Muslim-majority countries.

It applies to travellers with First and Business Class tickets on all Etihad US-bound flights from Abu Dhabi.

The new service enables  busy customers to do some work mid-flight or communicate with friends and family despite the electronics ban.

The security measure prohibits flyers from packing any electronic device larger than a mobile phone, including laptops, cameras and tablets in their carry-on bags.

“Premium Class guests on Etihad Airways flights to the US will receive Wi-Fi vouchers from our cabin crew with the onboard welcome drink. These vouchers will provide free Wi-Fi for the duration of the flight,” the airline said.

“In addition to free Wi-Fi, we’ll have iPads available on all US-bound flights for those that need them. Power and USB sockets at every seat will keep devices charged throughout the journey.”
