Police urge vehicle owners to lock parked cars and leave valuables out of sight
Abu Dhabi – Eight individuals suspected of car theft have been apprehended in the capital, the Abu Dhabi Police announced in a statement sent Saturday.
The suspects are accused of breaking into cars and stealing money, electronic items, phones, and wallets with credit cards, among other items. They have been referred to the courts for legal action.
The Police statement said that officials had received complaints about car theft, and had formed a team to look into the reported incidents.
Colonel Ahmad Al Muhairi, deputy director at the Capital Police Directorate, said many of the thefts had occurred because motorists had left valuables in their cars in plain view, luring thieves to break into cars and burgle them. Many vehicle owners had also forgotten to lock their cars.
The official, therefore, called upon owners to insure their vehicles, and leave valuables, including mobile phones, cash, electronics and computers, out of sight in parked cars. In addition, he advised that motorists avoid leaving their cars running when stepping into a nearby store. Motorists should also ensure that car security systems are functioning as additional safety against thefts.
The police also urged residents to report any car theft incidents they witness either by contacting the 8002626 toll-free number, or by calling 999.
As reported by Gulf News, an Asian suspect was arrested in 2013 for damaging and burgling more than 250 vehicles in the capital city.
