Dubai: The latest addition to Downtown Dubai’s host of attractions, the world’s first hydrogen-powered tramway, has arrived and is currently being tested, Emaar Properties has announced.
The Dubai Trolley, which will traverse mainly along the Mohammad Bin Rashid Boulevard, will transport tourists and residents around various attractions in Downtown Dubai, including Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall, The Dubai Fountain, Souk Al Bahar and Old Town.
The Dubai Trolley, which has the capacity to accommodate 74 passengers, is a double-decker tram in bright red colour, accentuated with aesthetic gold pin-stripes and green trim colours and Arabesque design features.
“The hydrogen and electric-powered trolley tram is being assembled on site with testing and commissioning to be undertaken shortly. Work on the elegantly designed Dubai Trolley stations is also progressing as per schedule,” Emaar said on Monday.
During the first phase of its operation, the tramway will travel through a distance of one kilometre, but it will eventually cover seven kilometres across the 500-acre Downtown Dubai.
It has a maximum speed of 80 kilometres per hour and, being hydrogen and electric-powered, it is designed to be eco-friendly.
“With so many world-class attractions in one square kilometre, visitors and residents needed a convenient mode of transit that provides them seamless connectivity while assuring a leisured pace,” said Ahmad Al Matrooshi, managing director of Emaar Properties.
A number of restaurants have recently opened along the entire stretch of Mohammed Bin Rashid Boulevard, particularly near Old Town, giving residents and visitors a wide array of dining options, from Arabic to French to Indian.
Emaar said work on Dubai Trolley’s Terminus near Old Town, and other stations, is being accelerated to ensure the facility is rolled out on time. The depots will be air-conditioned and will have an “aesthetically appealing façade.”
