Personal differences cause of incident, Dubai Police chief says
Dubai: A police officer was shot dead by a colleague on Sunday, Dubai Police said on Monday.
The incident happened at Al Rifaa police station towards the end of the shifts of the officers involved.
A top officer clarified that ideological differences were not the reason behind the officer’s killing.
Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazeina, Dubai Police Chief, said the incident was caused by personal differences and had nothing to do with political or ideological differences.
The suspect was identified as a 24-year-old sergeant from Yemen. The victim was also a Yemeni.
Maj Gen Al Mazeina said that the two men had an argument earlier in the day while they were still in their housing quarters, “Later in the day the two men argued again and there was an exchange of insults, and the younger officer took out his gun and shot his colleague,” he said.
He added that this is an isolated incident and that there is no truth behind the rumours on social media, saying that the incident was caused by different political views.
The victim served in Dubai Police for more than 30 years.
The incident happened towards the end of their shift in the afternoon.
The suspect has been arrested and the case transferred to the public prosecution.
Some media outlets politicised the incident, saying that one of the police officers was a Salafist and the other is Islahi (Yemeni Congregation for Reform), which Al Mazeina said was untrue.
