Dubai: A driver has been jailed for six months for beating a policeman and injuring him when he tried to handcuff him and damaging his walkie-talkie at a Dubai Metro station.

The 33-year-old Indian driver pressed his chest to the policeman’s shoulder and asked him to lend him his mobile phone three times in June.

When the policeman asked the driver to accompany him to the police desk at the station and to hand him his personal identification papers, the 33-year-old assaulted the policeman and pushed him.

The policeman fell down and injured himself after the 33-year-old resisted him and refused to be handcuffed.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Indian defendant of assaulting the policeman who was performing his duty and damaging the walkie-talkie that belonged to Dubai Police.

The accused had pleaded not guilty in court.

According to Tuesday’s ruling, presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the defendant will be deported following the completion of his punishment.

The assaulted policeman testified that he was on duty at the metro station when the incident happened.

“The accused came from behind and pressed his chest to my shoulder … then he asked me to lend him my phone. He repeated his request three times … then I asked him to accompany me to the police office. He refused and did not agree to show me his ID. When I tried to handcuff him, he pushed me and I fell down to the ground. He also shouted at me. I called up the duty officer and reported to him what had happened… when he pushed me, the walkie-talkie fell from my hand and broke,” the policeman said.

The duty officer said that the defendant acted rudely and misbehaved when they tried to handcuff him.

The primary judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
